Q

Qi in Medicine

What are the 2 Fundamental Ideas?

A
  1. Qi is the most fundamental substance comprising the human being.
    - humans, like the 10,000 things are products of heaven and earth
  2. Qi is the most fundamental substance which maintains the body’s activities/functions of the human body
    - humans absorb and digest qi from heaven and earth and this nourishes the five viscera (when the 5 viscera are harmonious they generate qi, blood, body fluids, and the shen is generated)
    - includes physical body as well as jing shen (essence-spirit; thoughts, feelings, emotions)

Q

Qi Production (2 parts)

A
  1. Principle sources of Qi in humans
    - Pre-heaven (Original/Primary/Source Qi) – qi inherited from parents’ reproductive essence and stored in the Kidneys
    - Post-heaven (Water and Grain Qi) – qi acquired from food via Spleen and Stomach; (Clear Qi) – qi acquired from air via Lung
  2. Relationships b/w organs and production of Qi

Q

Qi Production (2 parts)

Second Part: relationships b/w organs and production of Qi: A,B,C

A

A. Lung is the commander of Qi

  • Lung inhales clear Qi and exhales turbid Qi
  • clear Qi mixes with Grain Qi in chest/Lung and creates Zong Qi
  • Zong Qi drives respiration and powers the Heart to move Qi and Blood through the vessels to the entire body

B. Spleen and Stomach are source of generation and transformation of Qi and Blood

  • stomach receives food, Spleen transforms food and extracts the essence which it sends to the Lung

C. Kidneys store the essence-qi

  • includes both pre and post heaven essence-qi
  • post heaven essence supports organ functions and is mostly consumed by organs. The portion that remains is stored in the Kidneys
  • provides the basis for the Yuan Qi

Q

Movement of Qi

What is the Qi mechanism?

What are the fundamental movements of Qi?

A
  1. “Qi Mechanism”: the movement of Qi
    - the body’s qi is perpetually moving and there is no place in the body where it does not reach
    - when it stops moving life ceases
  2. Fundamental movements of Qi:
    - ascending, descending, entering, exiting
    - the organs, channels, and collaterals, qi, blood, fluids, nutritive and defensive, yin and yang, all depend on these movements for their inter-relations and for maintaining their normal physiological functions

Q

Qi functions: Push/Move/Transport

A

vigorous substance; stimulates and promotes:

  • growth and development
  • functions of the organs, tissues, channels, etc
  • production and circulation of blood (“when qi moves, blood moves”)
  • production, circulation, excretion of body fluids (“when qi moves, water moves”)

Q

Functions of Qi: Warming

A

Qi generates heat and warms the body

  • maintains body’s temperature
  • warmth promotes/helps maintain function of organs and channels; metabolism and circulation of blood and fluids

Q

Functions of Qi: Defending

A

Defends the body against invasion of external pathogenic factors

  • helps prevent illness
  • helps remove pathogenic factors that have already entered the body – helps prevent illness and helps promote recovery from illness

Q

Functions of Qi: Hold/control/contain

A

Qi holds, controls, contains the various fluids

  1. holds blood in the vessels
  2. holds sweat, urine, salivam gastro-intestinal secretions; controls amount of secretion and excretion and guards against loss of fluids
  3. holds the essence and prevents abnormal secretion

**holds fetus in place

Q

Functions of Qi: Transformation

A

Various transformations that result from movement of Qi

  • metabolism and inter-transformation of essence, qi, blood, body fluids
  • food and drink transformed (energy and nutrition extracted, dregs eliminated from body, made into qi, blood, fluids, essence, etc.)

Q

Functions of Qi: Nourishing

A

Spleen and Stomach transform and transport food and drink, and transform and generate food-essence-qi aka Nutritive Qi

  • Nutritive Qi circulates with the blood in the vessels to nourish entire body

  2. Zong Qi (Gathering Qi)
  3. Ying Qi (Nutritive Qi)
  4. Wei Qi (Defensive Qi)
  5. Zang Fu zhi Qi (bowel and visceral)

16
Q

Where is the Primary/Original Qi rooted?

Where does it spread to?

A

- rooted in the Kidneys

  • derived from Kidney/Congenital Essence
  • basis of Kidney Qi
  • root of Ming Men
  • supplemented by Post Heaven Qi (Food Qi)

- spread to organs and channels (whole body) via Triple Burner

17
Q

What are the functions of Original Qi?

A
  • stimulates and promotes the functional activities of the organs and tissues
  • facilitates transformation of blood
  • comes out/accumulates at Source points
18
Q

What is Gathering Qi made of?

What are the functions of Gathering Qi?

A

Gathering Qi (Chest Qi/Big Qi) resides in the chest

  • Food Qi + Clear Qi mix in the Lung and create Gathering Qi

Functions:

  • nourishes and promotes fx of Heart and Lung (respiration, speech & strength of voice, blood circulation)
19
Q

Where does Nutritive Qi originate from?

What are its functions?

A
  • originates from Spleen/Stomach (Water and Grain)

Grain Qi + Clear Qi + Original Qi – true Qi divides into Nutritive and Defensive

  • circulates with the blood in the vessels (through the 12 channels in order Lu, LI, St, Sp, Ht, SI, UB, Kid, Pc, TB, GB, Liv – then through Ren and Du vessels, to all organs and tissues

FUNCTIONS:

  • transforms into and generates blood (one component of blood)
  • nourishes entire body (Upper, Lower, Interior, Exterior; ORgans, channels skin, bones, etc.)
20
Q

Defensive Qi Production, Circulation, and Functions

A

Production: Grain Qi + Clear Qi + Original Qi (True Qi divides into Nutritive and Defensive)

Circulation: outside the vessels, 50 times/24 hours

  • Day: 25x in yang aspect (exterior) Night: 25x in yin aspect (interior, organs) – relationship to sleep

Functions:

  • maintains and protects surface of the body; defends body against invasion of external pathogenic factors
  • warming (organs, flesh, skin; maintains body’s temp at optimal level for function of organs and tissues)
  • controls the opening and closing of the pores and regulates sweating (qi holding function; regulates body temp)
21
Q

Organ Qi and Channel Qi

A
  • basic substance comprising the organs and channels
  • basic substance maintaining functional activities of organs and channels

Production: Clear Qi + Grain Qi + Original Qi

22
Q

True Qi

A
  • Last stage in Qi transformation process (highest order of Qi)

Comprised of: Clear Qi + Food Qi + Original Qi

2 aspects: Nutritive Qi (yin) and Defensive Qi (yang)

23
Q

Upright Qi

A
  • all the different aspects/types of Qi that come together to defend the body against external enviro and Pathogenic Qi
  • term used always in juxtaposition to Pathogenic Qi
24
Q

Middle Qi

A

Qi of the Spleen (and stomach)

  • Middle jiao: Middle-jiao Qi
  • in charge of transportation and transformation
  • “source of generation and transportation of qi and blood”
  • main qi responsible for upbearing/lifting function of qi (holds organs in place)
