1916 - In the Philippines, an offensive style of passing the ball in a high trajectory to be struck by another player (the set and spike) was introduced.
1930 - Beach volleyball started in California in 1930 as athletes took advantage of the natural resources readily available to them on the coast.
1948 - The first beach volleyball tournament was held in 1948 at Will Rogers State Beach in Santa Monica, California.
1964 - Volleyball became an Olympic sport for both men and women at the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
1996 - Beach volleyball became an Olympic sport in 1996 at the Atlanta Olympic Games.
