Q3 Flashcards
What are the characteristics of webbing the CFD uses ?
17kn , and a meltpoint of 193C. Can be used for life safety applications and utility.
T of F fire extinguishers can take the place of a hand line?
False. They do NOT
If fire has not been extinguished after the entire extinguisher has been discharged, what should you do?
Withdraw and reassess
How many letters is the serial # for a 60 min cylinder ?
5 digits. For a 45 min cylinder it is 6 digits
What re the 4 modes for mobile compressors ?
CBSD Cascade , booster, shoreline and diesel
What are the fill stations and colours the coincide
Training - blue
HQ - pink
Vehicle and maintenance - orange
High rise -yellow
Air light - GREEN (ALG)
What is the action called in phase 2 when the doors can open/close depending on what FF want to do?
The peek a boo feature
Where are the 3 places the elevator recall key switches are most often found in?
Elevator rooms (most )
Alarm rooms
Security desks (least)
When was the Calgary Hook ladder and bucket corps formed?
August 25, 1885
What is the CFD vision?
To be an international fire service leader
Who was the last LODD death?
John Morley James - July 13 1992
What is stack effect?
Natural, vertical movement throughout a high rise building caused by difference in temperatures between the inside + outside air. Not caused by fire - cause smoke to spread throughout the building
What is stratification l?
When the smoke in a building rises until it becomes cool and settles on a particular floor
A fire pump is required if a building is past____ floors
3
What floors are in each zone: Zone 1,2 & 3
Zone 1: 1-3
Zone 2: 3-13
Zone 3: 13 and anything greater
If there is a clogged connection on an FDC what is the best method to clear it?
Use a tool. Avoid using your hand !
Elevator operations: What does phase 1 mean?
Emergency recall: all elevators in that shaft return to the lobby and all door open. May be automatically initiated when a fire alarm is activated.
What does it mean if the firefighter helmet indicator is flashing?
Not safe to use
What are 2 characteristics of the PASS alarm noise and duration?
Must be at least 95 decibals and co off continuously for 1 hour
What is a safety precaution for PPE?
Always keep gear as dry as possible. Moisture can transfer heat rapidly.
Thermal burns at compression points - if felt, withdraw
What does the AHJ do?
Adopts and amends codes to meet local requirements
Safety factors on a building range from:
2:1 but can go up to as high as 6:1
What are some building collapse factors?
Time of Fire involvement
Building age and maintenance
Sounds of structural movement
Spalling of concrete members exposure of reinforcing steel etc
What 2 products of combustion are the most common produced at structure fires
CO/ hydrogen cyanide (HCN)
What fire development factor affects HRR?
Fuel type
What type of fuel can be the most dangerous of all types
Gaseous fuels
How many LODD are there in the CFD?
9 (10 w/ Billy steward)
When does testing occur for the UAC connection on the MSA G1?
Annual inspection and testing - performed by MSA tech and after each time UAC is used either operationally
Or during training
What is the strongest part of a roof?
Load bearing walls, corners, peaks, etc
Is sounding the roof enough to ensure roof stability?
No. It provides no info about structural members beneath the sheathing . Visually looking is the only way to confirm
What is a kerf cut?
Easiest and fastest hole to cut, only info is provided whether smoke or flame is present. Single slice through the roof
What are the three most challenging fires?
- Basement fires
- Windowless buildings
- High rise bldgs
What will directing a fog stream into a vertical exhaust opening while interior crews are inside do?
Never do this, It will force smoke, heat, and steam down onto them.
When conducting PPA operations: if there is fire attack going on, and a search team goes interior, what should the search team do if they encounter a closed door ?
Leave the door shut and only search OPEN compartments. Opening new doors have high potential to change the flow path. Crews need to enter and exit the structure from the intake only.
IFSTA pg.510
What will the application of water do to the compartment pressure?
Reduce the pressure differences that the fire creates, making PPA more effective
Before and after ventilating, walk along the ________________ and the strongest points of the roof.
Ifsta pg516
Walk along the load bearing walls
When monitoring air levels, high levels would be _____ than air?
Low levels would be what?
High levels would be LIGHTER than air (rise)
low levels would be heavier than air ( sink)
Is CO heavier or lighter than air?
Lighter than air. It will rise
What level is considered an oxygen deficient atmosphere? And what is the most common cause
Anything less than 19.5% oxygen
Combustion is the most common cause of oxygen def atmospheres.
- Oxidizers are combustible Y or N?
- Will they support combustion.
Oxidizers are NOT combustible, but do support/enhance combustion.
