Briefly describe the position of this muscle
Covers the upper part of the side of the thorax (anterolateral chest wall). It is sandwiched between the scapula and the ribs, covered by Latissimus Dorsi
State the attachments of this muscle
(PROXIMAL) fleshy digitations just anterior to the mid axillary line attaching to outer surfaces of upper 8/9 ribs and intercostal fascia.
(DISTAL) attaches to the costal surface of the medial border of scapula, between superior and inferior angles.
Name the nerve that supplies this muscle
Long Thoracic Nerve (C5, C6, C7)
State the actions of this muscle
Major protractor of the shoulder girdle. Lower fibres laterally rotate scapula. As a whole muscle will elevate ribs.
Give one functional activity in which this muscle is important
The reaching forwards phase of pushing / punching (boxers)
