- crossing between two or more media forms, typically in the context of digital media (e/g/ multimodal media forms such as video games based on sth)

- refers to the relationship between different forms of media
- phenomena which are non-media specific, meaning not connected to a specific medium, and therefore be realized in a large number of different media such as art, literature, or music
- transmedia occured because of the digitalization of the media (an evolving media environment was created)

- a theory which recognizes changing relationships and experiences with new media
- it explores the flow of content distributed across various intersections of media
- focuses on how media production and consumption has changed with the relevance to the participatory culture;
