Q2: Reading Approaches Flashcards
These are ways of dealing with reading tasks.
reading approaches
Four reading approaches
- skimming
- scanning
- extensive reading
- intensive reading
A quick reading approach that aims to get the main idea of the text.
skimming
This approach is more effective when the text is not too long because the general idea can be easily identified using other reading techniques such as reading the first and the last paragraph, reading the title, subtitle, or illustration, or just quickly glancing through the material.
skimming
This approach can also be used in non-linear texts when the reader is trying to identify what the chart is trying to show.
skimming
A quick reading approach used to get a specific detail from the text.
scanning
What reading approach is used in the following question:
- What is the main idea of the 2nd paragraph?
skimming
What reading approach is used in the following question:
* Where is the scene located?
* Who are the parents of the protagonist?
* How many pets did he have?
scanning
This reading approach does not require analysis.
scanning
Extensive reading is sometimes called ____________________.
Free Voluntary Reading
This approach allows the readers to learn new words by reviewing the unfamiliar words in the reading text.
extensive reading
In this approach, a large amount of reading, especially in the foreign language being learned, is encouraged.
extensive reading
A slow and careful type of reading used when you want to understand the reading material better.
intensive reading
It enables the reader to extract detailed information, note the sequence of events, and be aware of patterns, similarities, comparisons, and contrasts.
intensive reading
In this approach, the reader can use his/her knowledge of the text and his/her schema to give valid assumptions, analysis, and interpretation of the text (or information from the text).
