Q

Describe the sodium carbonate reaction

6

A

Sodium carbonate powder is placed in boiling tube

Ethanoic acid solution is added to boiling tube

Fizzing is observed

Lighted taper at mouth of boiling tube

Gas evolved is passed through limewater

Limewater turns milky because calcium carbonate (chalk) is formed

Q

Describe the reaction with magnesium metal

6

A

Small length of Manheim ribbon, cleaned with sandpaper, is added to a test- tube containing a dilute solution of ethanoic acid

A lighter taper is held at the mouth of the test tube

Fizzing is observed

A mild ‘pop’ is heard

Magnesium ethanoate and hydrogen are formed

Hydrogen forms an explosive mixture with air

Q

Describe the reaction with ethanol.

5

A

Add 2cm cubed ethanol to 1cm cubed glacial ethanoic acid in a test tube

Add the drops of sulfuric acid

Place test tube in beaker of hot water for ten minutes

Ethyl ethanoate is formed which has a fruity smell

No color change is observed
