Q2 Flashcards
Genetic code
64 triplets of nucleotides. These triplets are called codons.
Universal Genetic Code
The genetic code is universal because all species use the same four bases A,T,C and G, and each base sequence codes for the same amino acid in all species
Degenerate Genetic code
The genetic code is described as degenerate, or redundant, because a single amino acid may be coded for by more than one codon.
Transcription
Transcription is the process of making messenger RNA from a DNA template. DNA helicase breaks the hydrogen bonds between the DNA helix, free RNA nucleotides base pair with the exposed DNA template strand
Splicing
Splicing is a process where pre mRNA is transformed into mRNA. It involves the removal of Introns ( gene sequences which do not code for proteins ) and the attachment of exons (sequences which code for proteins) together.
