Why does a computer use ASCII codes?
Each character is a byte. A commonly used character set is ASCII. Each character has a unique binary partern.
State 3 ways that a date could be formatted as a data type
Long date - Saturday 12th September 2019
Short date - 12/09/19
Medium date - 12-Sept-2019
Name and describe two text file formats
TXT - plain text document, can be opened in any word processing program
CSV - used by database and spreadsheet applications.
Name and describe a utility program
Data backup and restore. Backs up data to create a copy stored in a different location.
Explain the difference between a query and a report
A query is a way of searching and extracting data from a database.
A report allows tables and results from queries to be presented in a user friendly way.
Explain how logical operators are used in designing database queries
Logical operators include less than, greater than equal to etc… You can design a query to extract data in a certain range e.g everyone younger than 18
Explain the differences between MAR and MDR
The address of the current instruction or data being executed is stored in the MAR
All data going from the main memory to the CPU goes via the MDR
Describe the main features of a 3D printer
Prints a variety of mediums e.g plastic or metal
Gradually prints a 3D object one layer at a time

Memory cards - used in phones, digital cameras and mp4 players. These are non-volatile come in a variety of formats e.g SD cards
Smart cards - banks cards use ‘chip and pin’. These cards contain a a small circuit which allows data to be transferred

Internet - WAN allows info to be passed globally. WWW is an application which uses the Internet
Intranet - a private network set up as a secure website. Owned and managed by that organisation

Network interface card - is an electronic circuit board that needs to be installed onto a computer to enable it to be connected to a network
Router - hardware device which connects a number of networks together either by cables or wireless
Describe how files are stored on the cloud
They are stored on high capacity cloud servers. Automatic saving occurs every few seconds
