Pyschodynamic Approach Eval Flashcards
1 Strength:
Research Support: Kasanin et al
Studied hospital records of ind w/ schz- found maternal overprotection in 33/45 cases
= One characteristic of schz mother- could be a risk factor.
H/O- May be biased as the researcher could have lacked objectivity
1 Strength:
Focus on role of mother in development of schz has led to further research in to role of family relationships.
= Provided foundation for valid, evidence based research.
Schofield: Studied 178 w/ schz 150 w/o
Found significant differences in qual of mothering in those with schiz= mothers were overbearing and controlling - supporting notion
1 Weakness:
Concepts it is based on are outdated.
First half of 20th century: concepts dominated; due to the unscientific nature and unfalsifiability of these concepts, psychologists became dissatisfied.
Cannot prove existence of concept such as ID and Ego- cannot trust these concepts to explain complex disorders such as schz.
1 weakness:
Psychodynamic approach suggests schz is due to early experiences (nature) but does not consider that there is strong evidence of bio factors in the development of schz (nature)
reduces complex behaviours (schz symptoms) down to a singular cause (childhood experiences) (ID and Ego)
