Introduction to psychodynamic + schz
German judge called Daniel- hospitalised 3 times and diagnosed w/ schz. Wrote book on his experiences. Freud never met Daniel, yet based his explanation of schz on his book.
Regressing back to pre-ego stage
Early chood experiences= shape adult personality
Psychological development occurs through series of psychosexual stages.
Fixations can occur during any stage through overind + frustrations.
Ind w/ schz= fixated during early development in oral stage (1st 2 months)
During extreme stress= if fixated during this stage, regress back.
Dominance of ID and lack of ego, causes symptoms such as hallucinations/delusions
Restablishing control of Ego
Ind w/ schz supposedly displays primary narcissism similar to a young baby, demonstrated through symptoms such as delusions. Other symptoms such as hallucinations, are the individuals attempt in re-establishing ego control
Schizophrenogenic Mother:
Freida Fromm-Reichman = Neo-freudian believed that mother-child relationship was crucial in development of schz.
Studies 40’s/50’s identified issues with mothers of children w/ schz.
Emotional development of children w/ schz= stifled by mothers behaviour.
Mother is dominant + controlling yet distant and cold- impact personal security.
Child grows into an adult who struggles to cope with stress
