Pyrethrin - Cat Flashcards
Common sources of concentrated pyrethrins are _______ products
Spot on / usually dog labelled products
MOA of pyrethrins?
Bind to Na channels on nerve → channels open and fire repetitively
How long after exposure do you expect CS?
Onset 2-4 hr; but can be delayed upto 24 hr
Common CS in pyrethrin toxicity?
- facial twitch → full body tremors
- seizures
- Hypersalivation, vomit, anorexia
- Depression
Death is common in pyrethrin toxicity. T/F
F
It is RARE, unless client lets you treat them
Prognosis for pyrethrin toxicity as per SPCA?
> 90%
The ones that don’t recover are those who have been tremoring or seizuring for few days and owner did not bring to hospital on timely basis
-
-
- Bathe entire car with liquid detergent
- Methocarbamol
- Fluids
Why do we use fluids as a Rx?
To counter myoglobinuria causing stress on kidneys
Tremors → muscle lysis → myoglobinuria → kidney damage
MAINTAIN THEM ATLEAST FOR 1 DAY
What is the Rx duration?
Normally 24 hr
Some cases needed 48-72 hr to resolve
Dosage for methocarbamol?
Initial dose = BW in kgs
Increments = initial dose / 2
Max dose = 3 x initial dose
_______ mg/kg/d is the highest dose of methocarbamol per books but author mentions that you can go above it if needed
330
Almost 3X the initial dose
Initial dose = BW in kgs
When to stop methocarbamol i.e. until all tremors stop?
NO, You donot have to stop all tremors. The ear & facial twitching is last to go.
AS LONG AS BODY TEMP. IS NOT GOING HIGHER, YOU DONOT NEED TO REPEAT THE DOSE FURTHER .
If methacarbamol is not working, then there can 2 causes. Which ones?
- Cat is COLD
- Have not given enough dose
Normal rx is around ___ hr; some cases need upto ____ hr for resolution
24
48-72
Prognosis ?
Prognosis is usually goof for mildly tremoring cats
• 93% recover in SPCA database
• The onees that don’t recover are the ones tremoring or seizuring for few
