PY4 Topics- Levels of Conciousness Flashcards
What are ‘exogenous zeitgebers’?
External cues which regulate our internal body clock, in order to remain in time with the environments fluctuating rhythm
What are the 3 main examples of exogenous zeitgebers?
- Light
- Social Cues
- Temperature
What is ‘Entrainment’?
The process of resetting the biological clock using exogenous zeitgebers
How can light reset rhythms through the body?
It can reset the SCN which is the body’s main ENDOGENOUS PACEMAKER.
Give examples of ‘social cues’ as exogenous zeitgebers
- Eating at socially determined meal times
2. Going to bed and waking up at times which are appropriate for our age and lifestyle
How did Campbell and Murphy investigate the role of ‘light’ as an exogenous zeitgeber?
They found that if you shine a light on the back of a participants knees, this resets their circadian rhythm.
Define the ‘State Theory’ of hypnosis
The hypnotized state is an altered state of consciousness. The mind and consciousness is divided into different channels of awareness and memories. There is a disassociation with the high control levels- splitting parts of the someone’s functioning into different levels of mental activity.
Define the ‘Non State Theory’ of hypnosis
Hypnosis doesn’t alter the conscious state of the mind, but changes the process of compliance and belief. The hypnotized state is a social response to a situation. it involves:
- imagination
- relaxation
- compliance
- role expectations
