PY3: Research Methods Flashcards
What are the 3 different experimental designs?
- Independent groups
- Repeated measures
- Matched pairs
Why would you use a pilot study in a psychological experiment?
It’s like a practice study, and can identify any flaws in the procedures. It helps the researcher to evaluate if the study is too hard or easy, and if it’s a valid way of testing their aims.
What does the experimental design ‘Independent measures’ involve?
2 groups, each groups undergoes a different condition, only one condition each
What does the experimental design ‘Repeated measures’ involve?
1 group, take part in both conditions of the independent variable
What does the experimental design ‘Matched pairs’ involve?
2 groups, one group is assigned to the experimental group, and the other to a control group
Psychology as a science: What are the advantages of a science?
- Obtain objective facts
- Correct mistakes
- Build on previous discoveries
What is a pilot study?
The first trial study
Define ‘Standard Deviation’
The average of the difference between the average score and all the other scores
What is stratified/snowballl sampling?
Giving 1 person a questionnaire with 10 more for them to hand out
What is random sampling?
Where each participant has the same chance at being selected
How do you test internal reliability?
Split-half test
How do you test external reliability?
Test-retest method
Define ‘Experimental Hypothesis’
Predicting there will be an effect
Define ‘Null Hypothesis’
Predicting there will be NO effect
What study gives an example of human rights being breached?
Zimbardo- The Stanford Prison Experiment
Reicher and Haslam re created this on BBC in 2002- ETHICALLY
