Why PwC?
- PwC is a highly respected brand with a strong global presence as a result of their ongoing devotion to providing audit and consulting services over the last 175 years.
- Once case study that highlighted the impacts of the companies service was the digitisation of ABRSM.
- As someone who has been exposed to old methods of taking exams with ABRSM, I have had experience of the old system.
- But to see how PwC helped them leverage the services of Microsoft Azure and optimize their booking systems was really inspiring to me.
- I’m excited with the prospect of working on a range of projects in these various industries and the chance to provide a service to many clients and helping them achieve their goals.
What understanding do you have of the role?
- I anticipate that I will be developing a range of skills such as data extraction, engineering, analytics and visualisations, all whilst learning to utilize the PwC-developed tools, so that I can provide meaningful and insightful audits
- I’ll be undertaking a structured training regime to learn that fundamental skills that are essential for digital audits.
- I will also be getting hands-on experience as I take part in work projects with various clients and industries.
- I understand that each project will be different and I will be in a constantly changing positions and using different learnt skills.
What do you anticipate you will do in your first year at PwC?
- I anticipate that I will be undergoing training through a combination of structured training pathways as well as online courses and academies to ensure I have a strong foundation of technical and accounting knowledge.
- I will also be expanding my current skill set, learning how to utilize various tools to assist clients in data engineering, analytics and visualization etc.
- What I’ll also anticipate I’ll be doing, which I am most excited for, is getting hands-on experience as I join teams to respond to clients requests.
What do you want to gain from this role/programme?
- From this work I want to firstly gain the knowledge and skillset to provide clients with meaningful and insightful audits
- In particular I want to be able to utilize and perfect technology systems to automate processes of generating audits for clients.
- Secondly I want to expand my network and develop meaningful connections with both members of the company as well as numerous clients.
- Most importantly I want experience in the industry and understand what it takes to succeed when creating audits as well as what it takes to be a successful company.
Why do you want to work in this role?
- I am very passionate about providing a service to customer, clients and stakeholders.
- Especially when it comes to technology, I’m always trying to help my friends and family navigate around their devices and systems.
- I believe the role as a digital audit will allow me to greatly utilize some of my existing technological skills as well as expand my current skillset so that I can help with more complex situations.
- I’m also excited by learning how to use the various digital tools used and created by the company so that I can automate and digitize audit delivery and provide meaningful services to a variety of clients.
Describe a problem or challenging situation during your studies or work experience and how you managed to overcome it?
- During my last year in university whilst I was developing a solution for my dissertation project, there was point in development where I kept running into issues with my program.
- In this case there were inconsistencies of how objects were interacting with each other
- Up till then I had only been making temporary fixes in trying to suppress the compilation errors, which wasn’t actually solving the underlying issues of my program.
- I soon came to realization that this was not the type of work I wanted to be displaying and decided to take action
- I spent a day just reviewing and re-designing the structure of my program in attempt to discover the issues and optimise my code
- After spending some more days implementing my revised structure I managed to discover and fix errors in the code, and as a result produced a higher quality piece of work.
What are you major achievements to date?
- One of my major achievements would have to be managing being part of the slalom racing team at University
- I attended a race trial to challenge myself as I never really skied competitively against other people
- As soon as I joined, there was the expectation for me to attend all practice sessions, races and social meetups and balancing this on top of my studies was challenging at first.
- However, after some scheduling and planning, I was able to create a solid routine
- As a result of closely following routine I was able to balance my studies and also succeed at developing my slalom racing ability.
- Together as a team, we had some really good results where we beat tough competitors.
- For me managing and seeing this improvement was a big achievement of mine.
What was the latest technology you learned, what inspired you to learn it and how has it been useful to you?
- I recently took it upon myself to learn about the cloud and cloud engineering
- I was fascinated by the cloud after reading an article on how cloud services like AWS are used in Formula 1, where a large amount of data is generated and processed by these cloud services.
- I wanted to see how exactly these services operate and are managed, so I searched for online resources I could use to learn more about it.
- I’ve since been using an online workshop provided by AWS where I’m learning about the skills of a cloud practitioner and how it can be used in real life scenarios.
- This has not only expanded my technical skill set but has given me a greater understanding of how these services can be useful in real world situations.
Tell us about a time when you led a team
- During my second year of university, we had a software engineering modules in which we were assigned a random group and had to work together to develop a game.
- I decided to take upon the leader role to challenge myself but also because I felt confident that I could understand everyone well
- As a leader I collaborated well with my team members, we all shared responsibility of the development
- I took responsibility for planning and supervising meetings, where I would check up on my team members and the progress we were making
- As result of our hard-work and my management we achieved a first class mark in that assignment
Describe a situation in which you had to deal with a difficult person?
- There was a time when I was working as a waiter on a busy restaurant shift
- and there was a customer who was upset with the delay of their food
- I remained calm and explained to them the situation and assured them that their food would be ready soon
- I took the initiative to provide them with some complimentary appetizers that I could prepare quickly
- The customer appreciated the gesture and their mood had been brightened.
- For me it’s important to remain calm and understand the viewpoint of the customer so that I can come to a reasonable solution.
Tell us about a time where you have shown courage or done something out of the ordinary?
- I was on a skiing trip in Pas De La Casa for my first year of university
- I had just spent the morning and afternoon skiing with friends. They were all tired and wanted to return back for some snacks and drinks and call it a day.
- I however, was excited to continue skiing and explore the slopes some more.
- I decided to part ways with my friends and ski solo, which I had never done before.
- It was important that I was responsible and ensure I didn’t put myself in any danger.
- I’m still alive today so my ventures were successful, I was able to explore a lot more of the mountains and had a wonderful experience
- For me skiing alone and exploring the mountains was very courageous.
What is your weakness?
- In the past I’ve felt as if I didn’t have much confidence in myself and sometimes I fail to recognize my achievements, as I have high standards for myself.
- I believe at times I have fallen into the trap of comparing myself to others.
- But since starting these interview processes and review my history, I have begun to take more pride in what I have accomplished.
- I’ve stopped seeing comparison as a native thing and instead an opportunity for me to keep persevering.
Tell me about yourself:
- I’m a recent graduate in Computer Science from Swansea University, where I successfully achieved 1st class honors.
Through my education I have equipped myself with a serious of technical skills, such as being able to program in multiple languages, such as python, C++ and Java, which I completed my dissertation project in. - In addition to this I’ve also learnt about a range of IT related topics and concepts and also experience in working with teams in group assessments.
- Outside of university I was a member of a ski racing team as part of the snow riders society, in which I was a part of a small team who competed against other universities in numerous competitions across the 3 years I was there.
- I’m now looking to build on the knowledge I have gained as well as gain some practical experience in the technology sector so that I can begin to start using my knowledge to benefit the world.
