PVD Flashcards
What is Leriches syndrome and what does it suggest
Leriches syndrome is a triad of:
- Intermittent claudication
- Absent/diminished femoral pulses
- Erectile dysfunction
May suggest PVD
If the superficial femoral artery is compromised, where is pain felt
Upper 2/3 of calf
Popliteal artery compromise gives pain where?
Lower 1/3 of calf
Compromise of which artery causes pain in the foot
Tibial or peroneal artery
What ABPI index is healthy / normal?
1-1.4
ABPI < 1 indicates PVD, ABPI > 1 indicates vessel wall stiffness due to calcification
If PVD suspected, what investigation should be done?
Lower limb doppler ultrasound to determine location and severity of obstruction
What are some pharmacological therapies for PVD
Long term anti platelet therapy with aspirin or clopidogrel
Lipid lowering therapy with statins
DM and HTN treatment
If there is critical limb ischaemia or a failure to respond to conservative management over 6 months, what is considered/done
Revascularization through a bypass graft or endarterectomy
