Atrial Flutter Flashcards
1
Q
What is atrial flutter
A
Atria contracting at high rates - 300bpm approx
2
Q
What are the 2 types of atrial flutter
A
Type 1 - typical atrial flutter. Moves in anticlockwise direction around Tricuspid valve
Type 2 - atypical atrial flutter. can originate in right or left atrium, undefined exact location
3
Q
Describe how an ECG of Atrial Flutter would look
A
Sawtooth ECG (f-waves)
4
Q
What symptoms may precipitate from atrial flutter (having a high ventricular rate)
A
SoB
Chest pain
Dizziness
Nausea
5
Q
What are consequences of atrial flutter
A
- Heart failure (prolonged tachycardia causes ventricular decompensation)
- Stroke (if blood stagnates due to ineffective atrial contraction - embolism to brain)
6
Q
How is atrial flutter treated
A
- Anticoagulants to reduce clot formation
- Beta blockers/CCBs to control rate
- Cardioversion
(4. Maybe radio frequency catheter ablation)
