PVD Flashcards
Arteriosclerosis
Plaque formation
Athersclerosis
Hardening of vessel walls
Collateral circulation
Main arteries are occluded so other arteries are made around it to perfuse the tissue
Who is more like to have collateral circulation, 35 y.o. or 70 y.o.?
70 year old
If someone comes in with “cold” leg, is it venous or arterial?
Arterial
Appearance of arterial issue
Ruby red because you are occluding the flow (ex: rubber band around your finger)
Appearance of venous issue
Purple/violet, edematous, brownish
What is the color when a person has an arterial issue and they elevate their extremities above their heart?
Pale
Thin, shiny, hairless skin; thickened toenails
Manifestations of peripheral or venous?
Arterial
Ankle/brachial index
Systolic BP in ankle / Systolic brachial BP (A divided by B)
The closer you are to 1, the more perfusion you have.
Angiography
Putting an IV in the artery (Right femoral artery most commonly used)
Priority nursing intervention after angiogram
Monitor puncture site & assess for s/s of bleeding
May have hematomas, pseudo aneurysm, occult bleeding, bruit
S/S of intraperitoneal bleeding
Low BP
High HR
Altered mental status
Dizziness
