Putting Atoms Together Terms Flashcards
What is a molecule?
Two or more atoms of the same or different elements that are chemically joined.
What is chemical formula?
Notation that indicates the type and number of atom(s) in a pure substance.
What is a molecular element?
A molecule that consists of two or more of the same element.
What is a molecular compound?
A molecule that consists of two or more of different elements.
What is an ion?
A particle that is either negatively or positively charged.
What is a cation?
An ion that is positively charged.
What is an anion?
An ion that is negatively charged.
What is an ionic compound?
A compound that consists of positively and negatively charged ions.
Why do atoms combine?
To become more stable.
What do metals + metals make?
They create alloys, which are solutions, not compounds.
What do non-metals + non-metals make?
They create covalent bonds. Which is a bond formed when two non-metal atoms share electrons.
What does a metal + non-metal make?
They create ionic compounds. Metals are cations, and non-metals are anions. They attracted each-other because of positive and negative charges.
What are the 7 molecular elements?
Hydrogen, Nickle, Oxygen, Fluorine, Chlorine, Bromine, and Iodine.
