What is an element?
A pure substance that cannot be broken down into a simpler chemical substance, by any physical or chemical means.
What is a compound?
A pure substance composed of two or more different elements that are chemically joined.
What are metals?
Are elements that are lustrous, ductile, malleable, and conducts heat and electricity.
What are non-metals?
Elements that are usually a gas or dull powder that cannot conduct heat or electricity.
What are metalloids?
Elements that have properties of metals and non-metals.
What are alkali metals?
Elements un the first column of the periodic table, and are silvery, soft, but highly reactive.
What are alkaline earth metals?
Elements in the second column of the periodic table and are shiny, silvery, but not as soft or reactive as alkali metals.
What are halogens?
Elements in the 17th column of the periodic table, and are poisonous in small and large quantities.
What are noble gases?
Elements in the 18th column of the periodic table, that are un-reactive, are gases, and they glow brightly when electrical currents are passed through them.
What are periods?
A row on the periodic table
What are isotopes?
An atom with the same number of protons and electrons, but a different number of neutrons.
What is atomic number?
The number in the top left-hand corner of each element and it’s also the number of protons in an atom.
Atomic mass vs mass number?
Atomic mass is the mass of the atom, while mass number is the number or protons and neutrons in the atoms nucleus.
