In deciding whether to initiate of continue a pursuit the Officer will take the following factors into consideration
Charges
Identity
Vehicular/pedestrian traffic
Roadway
Environmental factors
Type of department vehicle
Training and experience- am I new?
Speed/Reckless driving of Suspect
Non-sworn passenger
What are prohibited things to do doing a pursuit?
Ramming
Run them off the side of the road
Discharge a firearm into the car
Roadblocks
Civilian cars as roadblocks
Speed past them to deploy a stopstick
Can’t follow them the wrong way down the road
What are 3 things that would end a pursuit if they occurred to your vehicle?
Emergency lights failure
Mechanical failure
Damage to vehicle
When are stopsticks prohibited?
2 & 3 wheeled/off road vehicles
Hazmat vehicles
unpaved roads
When can you use stopsticks?
Supervisor says so
Officer trained?
Will it end the pursuit?
Is it safe to do so? Is it on a non-limited access highway
Use/success will be documented in critical incident and blue team report
How many officers are allowed in a pursuit?
2 unless supervisor approval
