Purpose Of Endocrine System/ Hormones Flashcards
Why know the functions of everything in the endocrine system?
5 general functions:
1. Differentiating reproductive and CNS of the developing fetus
2. Stimulating growth and develop during childhood/adolescence
3. Coordination of male and female reproductive systems
4. maintain optimal internal environment throughout lifespan
5. Integrate corrective and adaptive response in EMERGENCIES
What is the Hormone and Action of the Pineal Gland?
Hormone: Melatonin
Action: Causes drowsiness, help regulate sleep/wake cycle
In the anterior lobe of the pituitary gland, what are the hormones and their actions?
- Somatropin Growth Hormone: stimulates growth, cell reproduction. Releases insulin from the liver.
- TSH: promote secrete activity T3 and T4
- Follicle stimulating hormone: ovarian follicle, secrete estrogen (Female), maturation sperm (male)
- Leutenizing hormone: promote ovulation, secrete progesterone and testosterone
- Prolactin: stimulating milk production, sexual gratification during sexual activity
- ACTH: stimulate secretory activity, synthesis corticosteroids
- Lipotropin: break down fats, stimulate melanin production
- Melanocyte: stimulating hormone- produce melanin- skin and hair
What are the hormones and their actions in their posterior lobe?
- ADH antidiuretic: reabsorb water (retain in kidney), vasoconstriction, release ACTH in anterior pituitary
- Oxytocin: stimulate contraction, release breast milk, regulate circadian rhythm, body temp, sleep wake cycle, activity level
What are the hormones and their actions in the thyroid gland?
Hormones: T4 thyroxine/T3 triodothyronine
Actions: Regulate oxidation of body cells and growth metabolism, mobilize fats, exchange water, protein synthesis, increase basal metabolic rate
What is the hormone and its action in the parathyroid gland?
Hormone: parathyroid
Action: essential for calcium and phosphorous metabolism, calcification of bone
What are the hormones and their actions in the cortex of the adrenal gland?
- Mineral corticoides: maintain fluid/ electrolyte balance, reabsorb sodium chloride, secrete K+
- Glucocorticoids/Cortisol: food metabolism, body response to stress, preserve carbs and mobilize amino acids, suppress inflammation and immune function
- Sex hormone/testosterone, estrogen, progesterone: ability to influence secondary sex characteristics
What are the hormones and their actions of the medulla in the adrenal gland?
- Epinephrine/adrenaline: fight or flight response, cardiac/myocardial stimulation, increase HR, vasoconstriction with increase BP, increase blood glucose via glycolysis, stimulate ACTH production
- Norepinephrine: similar to epinephrine
What are the hormones and their actions in the pancreas?
- Insulin: increase utilization of carbs, decrease blood glucose
- Glucagon: hyperglycemia factor, increase BP via glycogenolysis
3: Amylin: slow down gastric emptying, inhibit digestive function, food intake
What are the hormones and their actions of the ovaries?
- Estrogen: secondary sex characteristics, maturation of sexual function, GI function, lung function
- Progesterone: prepare and maintain pregnancy
What are the hormones and their actions in the testes?
- Testosterone: secondary sex characteristics, mature and normal sex function
- Adiponectin lepton (LEP): control metabolism, hungry, vasoconstriction
