Extreme Protestants
What was their problem?
They were annoyed that Elizabeth was so relaxed about catholics and wanted them removed completely

Small group of Puritans who continued to persist about the church being slightly catholic
What were prophesyings?
Puritan meetings where they discussed, criticised Elizabeth and did prayers
Who was Edmund Grindal?
The Archbishop of Canterbury - Elizabeth asked him to stop the prophesyings but he refused so he was dismissed.
What were established in 1580 and 1592?
Separatist churches specifically for puritans - annoyed at normal churches
Who was John Field?
Extreme puritan - he wrote books about how regular church was bad and went to prison for a year where he tried promoting new pro-puritan laws

Robert Dudley - Queen’s good friend and potential husband

Who was John Whitgift?
New Archbishop of Canterbury - new rules to crack down on Puritanism - enforced church attendance with Recusancy fines.
What other ways did Elizabeth respond to Puritanism?
Harsher punishments - Puritan printers such as John Stubbs who had his hand chopped off for criticising one of Elizabeth’s marriage talks.
