What happened in 1570?
The pope issued the Papal Bull to encourage catholics to end Elizabeth’s rule - many chose to ignore it
What happened in 1571? (Not Ridolfi plot)
Recusancy fines were first introduced - fines for Catholics who didn’t take part in church services. Elizabeth did not enforce them too harshly. It became illegal to own any Catholic items.
What happened in 1574?
Spanish priests arrived in England. William Allen educated them in the Netherlands to go to England and try and convert people to Catholicism.
What happened in 1580?
Jesuit priests arrive in England. Came to England to try and make people Catholic. Seen by Elizabeth as a threat so were treated harshly.
What happened in 1581?
Recusancy fines made £20 - unaffordable. Became high treason to convert to Catholicism
What happened in 1585?
New law - any priest who had become one after 1559 was now a traitor.
What happened in 1593?
The statute of confinement - catholics could not travel more than 5 miles from their house without permission from the authorities

Spanish Armada attacked England
Who was Edmund Campion?
A Jesuit who came to England in 1580 with John Parsons to try and convert people to Catholicism.
What happened to him?
He was arrested because authorities were certain he wanted to start a rebellion. He was found guilty and executed. Parsons escaped England, never to return. Caused Elizabeth to take a stronger stance against the Catholics.
