pure substances Flashcards
What are the 2 classifications of matter?
Pure Substances and Mixtures
Pure Substances have 2 different categories, name both
Elements and Compounds
Matter with a composition that is always the same
Pure Substances
Consists of 1 type of atom
Elements
What are the differences of elements and compounds?
Elements have only 1 atom while compounds can have 2 or more elements. Compounds can be bonded chemically and they can be separated as well, but for elements, they cannot be physically or chemically separated due to it only having 1 atom.
Composed of 2 or more elements
Compounds
They are good conductors of electricity and heat and these are shiny in appearance. They are strong and hard, malleable and ductile and sonorous
Metals
Where can we find elements?
Periodic Table
Is water an element or a compound? Elaborate and explain your answer.
Water is a compound since it is chemically combined with hydrogen and oxygen. Water doesn’t have its own element so we say that it is a compound substance. The chemical formula of water is H2O
They are bad conductors of electricity and heat they are dull in appearance. They are usually weak soft and brittle and are non-sonorous
Non-Metals
Name 1 characteristic of a Pure Substance
1- Fixed composition
2- Distinct properties
3- Cannot be separated into simpler substances by physical methods
4- Can only be changed in identity and properties by chemical methods
5- Properties do not vary from one sample to another
True or False? CO2 is a compound substance
True. It is because CO2 is carbon dioxide which has the elements, carbon and oxygen.
