Pure 2.5 - Polar Coordinates Flashcards
What are polar coordinates?
An alternative method of describing the position of a point ๐ in a two-dimensional space
Two measurements are required:
The distance from the pole (usually the origin), ๐
And the angle measured anticlockwise from the initial line (usually the positive ๐ฅ-axis), ฮธ
Polar coordinates are written as (๐,ฮธ)
How would you convert from cartesian form to polar form?
๐ฅ=๐cos(ฮธ)
๐ฆ=๐sin(ฮธ)
๐ยฒ=๐ฅยฒ+๐ฆยฒ
ฮธ=arctan(๐ฆ/๐ฅ)
Describe the polar graph ๐=๐.
๐=๐ is a circle with centre ๐ and radius ๐
Describe the polar graph ฮธ=ฮฑ.
ฮธ=ฮฑ is a half-line through ๐ and making an angle ฮฑ with the initial line
Describe the polar graph r=๐ฮธ.
r=๐ฮธ is a spiral starting at ๐
Describe how to find the area of sector bounded by a polar curve.
The area of a sector bounded by a polar curve and the half-lines ฮธ=a and ฮธ=b, where ฮธ is in radians is given by the formula
A=ยฝโซโแต๐ยฒdฮธ
How would you find a tangent of a polar curve that is parallel to the initial line?
Set d๐ฆ/dฮธ=0
How would you find a tangent of a polar curve that is perpendicular to the initial line?
Set d๐ฅ/dฮธ=0
