WHAT IS A SUBCULTURE?
A differentiation from the parent culture that maintains some principles however takes on different norms and values
WHAT IS SYMBOLIC CAPITAL?
The sense of worth (STATUS) that students receive from others
WHAT IS SYMBOLIC VIOLENCE?
- Using your Symbolic Capital against someone who has less to demonstrate superiority over them
- Using symbols and ideas to control/dominate others
DESCRIBE THE TWO TYPES OF PUPIL SUBCULTURE.
1) Pro School Subculture
- committed to school
- Gain approval through school
- Two types: Academic achievers and New enterprisers
2) Anti School Subculture
- Lower streams and sets
- Rejection of school values
- Disrupting and Truanting

Through DIFFERENTIATION followed by POLERISATION
WHAT IS DIFFERENTIATION?
The system of teachers categorising pupils based on ability (for example streams and sets)
WHAT IS POLERISATION?
The pupils response to differentiation. The response is either become part of an anti school or pro school subculture

2) Gendered uniform
3) The Ethnocentric Curriculum (BALL)
4) Gender Stereotypes in subjects - reinforces gender identity
5) Students align their ability with the type of school they go to (REAY)
6) Pupil Subcultures
7) Symbolic Violence (ARCHER)
8) Symbolic Capital - ostracises those who don’t conform
