EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT - CLASS - INTERNAL FACTORS Flashcards
MAKE A MIND MAP OF THE FIVE DIFFERENT CLASS INTERNAL FACTORS
1) Labelling
2) Self Fulfilling Prophecy
3) Setting and Streaming
4) Pupil Subcultures
5) Pupil Identity
DESCRIBE LABELLING AND ITS IMPACTS
- Teachers attach a label to a pupil which is often nothing to do with their ability
- Based on how close the pupil fits the ‘Ideal Pupil’ (white/middle class /female)
- BECKER: Teacher pupil interactions are based off of these labels which students can develop an SFP off of
IMPACT: Either SFP or rejection of label (think Fuller 1984, black girls)
DESCRIBE THE SELF FULFILLING PROPHECY AND ITS IMPACTS
- Students take on the label attached to them
- negative labels (leading to anti school subculture) are usually placed on w/c
EXPLAIN SETTING AND STREAMING ALONG WITH ITS IMPACTS
Setting: Individual subjects
Streaming: Every subject
- w/c usually placed in lower streams which can lead to low self esteem and underachievement
- also limits students access to opportunities
WHAT ARE PUPIL SUBCULTURES AND WHAT ARE THEIR IMPACT?
- Anti School Subculture: Lower streams, rejection of values and truanting
- Pro School Subculture: Committed gaining status through academic achievement
IMPACT: w/c more likely to be part of an anti school subculture so achieve worse
DESCRIBE PUPIL IDENTITY AND ITS IMPACT ON EDUCATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT.
Habitus (Bourdieu) is ways of thinking and acting shared by a social class.
Includes tastes, expectations and outlooks on life
The habitus of the school is normally m/c so w/c habitus devalued by the school
WHAT IS ONE AO3 POINT ON LABELLING?
Deterministic - too much importance on teacher interactions and ignores teacher training
WHAT IS ONE AO3 POINT FOR THE SFP?
Deterministic, Pupils (Fuller) can reject the label
WHAT IS ONE AO3 POINT FOR SETS AND STREAMS?
Allows for higher ability students to be stretched and supports lower ability ones
WHAT IS ONE AO3 POINT FOR SUBCULTURES?
Not all pupils join them.
WHAT IS ONE AO3 POINT FOR PUPIL IDENTITY?
Postmodernists argue that class doesn’t have a much impact on pupil identity due to the ‘pick and mix’ culture
