Crime in Britain
Prisons in Britiain are at a breaking point. It is believed that over 30,000 crimes are committed daily.
Causes of Crime
- Media
- Poor education
- Poor parenting
- Poverty
- Mental health problems
- Drug/ alcohol addictions
- Unemployment
- Peer pressure
What does Christianity teach about Punishment?
- If people commit sins or crimes they should expect justice to follow
- Jesus taught forgiveness, people should aim to forgive
- To gain justice punishment should be given as well as forgiveness
- God will be responsible for the final judgement
- Jesus taught compassion not revenge
- Everyone has freewill
- Do not support the idea of retribution
What does Islam teach about punishment?
- A follower of Islam should make the choice between good and evil deeds
- Punishment is important, so if forgiveness
- Allah will be the final judge on judgement day
- Allah sets the rules, humans have a duty to follow them, if not punishment should follow
- Some country laws practise Shari’ah Law
- Allah’s 99 names (compassionate, merciful, generous)
- Punishment has nothing to do with removing sin)
- Shari’ah law practices punishment - cutting a hand off for theft
