Pulses Flashcards
Type: Accelerated
Characteristics: Pulse >150bpm (>170bpm - fatal results).
Implication: Pressure on the base of the brain; shock.
Type: Bounding
Characteristics: Pulse that quickly reaches a higher intensity than normal, then quickly disappears.
Implication: Ventricular systole and reduced peripheral pressure.
Type: Deficit
Characteristics: Pulse in which the number of beats counted at the radial pulse is less than that counted over the heart itself.
Implication: Cardiac arrhythmia.
Type: High Tension
Characteristics: Pulse in which the force of the beat is increased; an increased amount of pressure is required to inhibit the radial pulse.
Implication: Cerebral trauma.
Type: Low Tension
Characteristics: Short, fast, faint pulse having a rapid decline.
Implication: Heart Failure; Shock.
