Principles of Splinting and Immobilization Flashcards
Unless otherwise directed by a physician, splint the extremity in the position in which it was found.
Step 1
Establish a baseline level of sensation and skin temperature so that any changes can be noted.
Step 2
Immobilize the joint(s) proximal and distal to the injured site.
Step 3
Edema will most likely form soon after the injury. The splint should allow for edema and be regularly readjusted to account for swelling.
Step 4
To allow capillary refill to be checked, leave the fingers or toes uncovered when possible. Regularly assess capillary refill.
Step 5
After immobilization, periodically question the athlete about increased pain, diminished or altered sensation, and changes in skin temperature.
