Pulmonology Flashcards
Indications for Spirometry or Pulmonary Function Testing
Evaluate disease or determine presence of disease
Evaluate symptoms: chronic cough, wheezing, dyspnea
Objective measurement of therapies
Assess risk before surgery
Evaluate work exposures
Tidal Volume
Volume of air moved into or out of lungs during quiet breathing
Residual Volume
Volume of air remaining in lungs after maximal expiration
Importance of Residual Volume
Maintain patency of alveoli for gas exchange
Inspiratory Reserve volume
Volume of air that can be further inhaled after normal inspiration
Vital Capacity
Maximum amount of air that can be exhaled following maximum inspiration
Total Lung Capacity
Volume of lungs at maximum inspiration
Functional Residual Capacity
Volume of gas at normal tidal volume end expiration
