Pulmonary testing DSA Flashcards
what is total lung capacity (TLC)?
what is FVC?
what is FEV1?
TLC = FVC+RV
FVC is when the patient exhales as forcefully and as long as they can
FEV1 is how much air patient can exhale in 1 sec
FEV1/FVC ratio
what is diffusing capacity dependent on?
- surface area for gas transfer
- how readily blood can accept the gas being transferred
what does it mean if FEV1/FVC is normal or elevated?
restrictive or normal pattern
what does it mean if FEV1/FVC is low?
obstructive pattern
if FEV1/FVC is normal/elevated, what does it mean if FVC is low?
restrictive pattern
if FEV1/FVC is normal/elevated, what does it mean if FVC is normal?
normal (duh)
if FEV1/FVC is low, what does it mean if FVC is low?
could be an array of things that we don’t need to know and figured that out after I spent HALF AN HOUR ON THEM
if FEV1/FVC is low, what does it mean if FVC is normal?
pure obstruction
how can we tell the kind of restriction pattern?
DCLO (diffusing capactiy)
what conditions cause a decrease in DCLO?
anemia, pulmonary arterial hypertension, thromboembolic disease
after accounting for FEV1/FVC and FVC, what is needed to confirm the presence of restrictive disease?
TLC
what does air trapping lead to an increase in?
residual volume (RV)
