what is cor pulmonae?
A
enlargement right side of the heart as a result of disease of the lungs or the pulmonary blood vessels. (often from pulmonary HTN)

Symptoms
A
dyspnoea, fatigue, syncope

Signs
A
cyanosis, tachycardia, raised JVP

Blood test results
A
Hb and haematocrit raised
ABG: hypoxia, w/wo hypercaptnia

CXR
A
enlarged RA and RV, prominent pulmonary arteries

Tx
A
underlying cause: COPD + pulmonary infections
cardiac failure: diuretics like furosemide
consider venesection if haematocrit >55%
Heart-lung transplant for young patients
