Pulmonary hygiene Flashcards
Risk factors for complications
-Chronic disease
-Obesity
-Smoking
-Infection
-Trauma
-Immobility
What is the most effective position?
Semi fowlers (45 degrees)
When do you have affected lung down?
Hemorrhage or abscess (painful collection of pus)
When do you have good lung down?
pneumothorax, atelectasis, or pneumonia
What are ways to move secretions?
Up out of bed, suctioning, position changes, and humidification
Face masks
-short term, fit loosely
-oxygen from 35-50%
Venturi
-higher concentration
-24-60% (4-12 L/min)
When is a venturi mask usually used?
for pts. with COPD and who need low, constant oxygen concentrations
Non-rebreather masks
-simple masks with a reservoir bag
-Flow rate 10-15 LPM
-Face buckets
-capable of delivering higher concentrations of oxygen for shorter periods of time.
-If bag is deflated, the patient is breathing large amounts of exhaled carbon dioxide
Incentive spirometer
-Encourages voluntary deep breathing by providing visual feedback
-helps prevent postoperative atelectasis
-used for pts. that have prolonged bed rest
what does semi fowlers promote?
lung expansion while simultaneously reducing pressure from abdomen diaphragm
Huff coughing
-Stimulates natural cough reflexes
-clears central airway
-loosens secretions then produces sputum
Pursed lip breathing
increases volume exhaled of trapped air
