Orthopedic care Flashcards
For soft tissue injuries, use ___
R.I.C.E
S/S of a fracture
-Edema
-Muscle spasm
-Deformity
-Contusion (bruises)
-loss of function (injury to distal area)
-Crepitation (grading or crackling sounds)
Reducing a fracture (closed)
Manual manipulation such as casting
Reducing a fracture (open)
Surgical realignment
(ORIF, pins, plates)
Traction
A pulling force to an
injury while a
countertraction pulls in
the opposite direction
Skin (bucks) traction
-short term
-Used until skeletal traction is initiated
Skeletal traction
-long term
-pin or wire inserted in the bone
- risk of infection at pin site
Skeletal traction procedure
-weights hang freely
-no pillow under suspected limb
-protect from foot drop
- issues of immobility
-pin care according to protocols
Internal fixation nursing interventions
-Know what movements are contraindicated
-Utilize PT for teaching and include family
-Monitor incision
External fixation nursing interventions
-Assess circulation, sensation every 4 hrs
-Pin care
-Move using device, not extremity-move the extremity as a
unit
-Watch injury from pins
Purpose of casting
Immobilizes extremity until bone can form callus and
heal
