Pulmonary functions testing Flashcards
Indications for pulmonary functions testing (PFT)
Evaluation of signs/symptoms, progression of people at risk of lung disease (cough, dyspnea, cyanosis, wheezing, hyperinflation, hypoxemia, hypercapnia)
Monitor effectiveness of therapy
Evaluate preoperative patients
Contraindications for PFT
Contraindicated in patients w/o symptoms and who have congestive heart failure
Obstructive patterns in the results of a PFT
A low FEV1/FVC ratio (the forced expiratory volume in 1 sec divided by the forced vital capacity) indicates an obstructive pattern
Restrictive patterns in the results of a PFT
If the FEV1/FVC ratio is normal a low forces vital capacity value indicates a restrictive pattern
Spirometry
Measurement of the air moving in and out of the lungs during various respiratory maneuvers. Determines how much air can be inhaled, exhaled and how fast.
Spirometry
Measurement of the air moving in and out of the lungs during various respiratory maneuvers. Determines how much air can be inhaled, exhaled and how fast.
The three most important measures are
The FVC, FEV1 and the FVC/FEV1 ratio
