Pulmonary Function Tests Flashcards
Pulmonary function tests tell you:
ab the integrity of airways, function of respiratory muscles, and condition of the lung tissues
Measure lung volumes and capacities, gas flow rates, gas diffusion and distribution
Spirometer
Most common PFT, measures volume of air and time
MAX inhalation followed by MAX exhalation
Can do multiple times/day after bronchodilators
Pt instructions for PFT should be:
Take deep breath in
Place mouth piece in mouth, create good lip seal
Blow out all air in lungs, blow out air as forceful and fast as you can
Keep blowing till i say stop (for 6 seconds)
How would you interpret PFT?
FVC = 80-85% predicted means pt does NOT have pulmonary restrxn
< 80% predicted = obstructive or restrictive pulmonary disease
FEV1 if % predicted is WNL
How do you interpret type of disease?
FEV1/FVC
> 80% = restrictive lung disease
< 75% = obstructive lung disease
