Pulmonary Function Testing Flashcards
What are the effort dependent tests?
Forced expiratory volumes
Flow rates
Spirometry
What are the effort independent tests?
Relaxed vital capacity (spirometry) Helium/ Nitrogen washout for static lung volumes Whole body plethysmography Impulse oscillometry Exhaled breath nitric oxide
What are the gas diffusion tests?
CO transfer factor (TLCO)
ABGs
SaO2 during exercise
What is a forced expiratory manovre?
From total lung capacity to residual volume
What can you get from a flow volume curve?
Peak expiratory flow rate
Forced expiratory flow rate at a percentage of FVC
On a flow volume curve, what disease will show volume dependent airway closure and why?
Asthma and chronic bronchitis
Due to mucosal oedema
On a flow volume curve, what disease will show pressure dependent airway closure and why?
Emphysema
Due to loss of alveolar support
What does bronchial challenge testing measure?
Airway hyper responsiveness
A decreases SaO2 during exercise suggests which disease?
DPLD
Decreased FEV1 or PEF post exercise suggests which disease?
Asthma
What is being measured in a TLCO test?
The CO diffusion across the alveolar/arteriolar barrier
When would you see a decreased TLCO?
Anaemia Emphysema DPLD Pulmonary oedema Pulmonary emboli Bronchiectasis
What is TLCO used for in DPLD patients?
Monitoring response to treatment
How is airway resistance measured?
Whole body plethysmography or with impulse oscillometry. Can be used in children who struggle with forced expiratory manovres
What is the exhaled breath condensate?
Exhaled nitric oxide measured at a flow of 50ml/s
