Pulmonary Disease Flashcards
What are the three primary “jobs” of respiration in the body?
Breathing, gas exchange, and oxygen use
Which respiratory tract houses the nasal cavity, the epiglottis, the pharynx, the larynx, and the vocal chords?
The upper respiratory tract
What is the purpose of the lower respiratory tract?
Gas exchange
Does the upper or lower respiratory tract contain the trachea and esophagus?
The lower respiratory tract
Why does the left lung only have two lobes while the right lung has three?
The left lung is near the heart and therefore needs a little extra space for squeeze room
What is the purpose of the mucociliary escalator located in the bronchi?
It acts as a defensive barrier that traps and moves bacteria that could attack the lungs back up into the throat via cilia and mucus produced by goblet cells
What are the two primary organs involved in respiration that contribute to inhalation and exhalation?
Diaphragm and intercostal muscles
What is the definition of forced vital capacity?
The volume of air forced from the lungs during forced maximal expiration
What other organ does lung disease affect?
The heart
Why might lung disease be so detrimental to one’s health?
Lost or damaged pulmonary membrane is not recoverable
What type of pulmonary disease limits lung expansion?
Restrictive
What does obstructive pulmonary disease limit with the lungs?
Air flow
What is atelectasis?
The partial or full collapse of the lung(s)
Asthma is an example of which pulmonary disease?
Obstructive
Which part of the respiratory tract does asthma target?
The bronchi and bronchioles
