Pulm Flashcards
what is released from hemoglobin during oxygenation of Hb?
H+ ions (will decreased pH); this will help convert HCo3- to make bicarb (which can convert to CO2 and H2O)
haldane effect (2 consequences) with binding of O2 to hemoglobin
- affinity for Co2 decreased, resulting in unloading of CO2 from hemoglobin
- acidity of hemoglobin in increased; protons are released from hemoglobin binding sites
Aspergillus fumigatus is what type of infection? See commonly in what types of patients?
opportunistic fungal infection; seen in asthmatic and cystic fibrosis patients; may cause bronchietasis and eosinophilia
even is pathologic conditions (ie pulmonary fibrosis)..what is the difference between CO2 and O2 gas exchange?
CO2 diffusion occurs 20 times faster than O2; capillary and alveolar CO2 pressures fully equilibrate while O2 does not.
O2 diffusion is greatly impaired in pathologic conditions
lung abscess formation predominantly mediated by what cell type?
neutrophils
exacerbations of COPD are caused by worsening of underlying inflammation and are most often triggered by what type of infections?
viral or bacterial respiratory infections (ie rhinovirus)
