Pulleys Flashcards
What is a pulley
It’s a wheel with a rope that’s goes around the wheel in its groove and the rope attaches to the obese the and force is applied to the end of the rope
Fixed pulley
Obey moves
Pulley stays in same spot
Force is applied only to one end
Single fixed pulley
Provides user with directions
Effort needed to lift is equal to load
Directional advantage
Movable pulley
Moves along rope
Pulley and object moves together
Wheel supports the load
Reduces the force needed to move the object
Since movable pulley
Requires half the effort to lift load because there is more than 1 rope arm
System of pulleys
The more complex the pulley the effort needed to move the object decreases
Double pulleys
Combination of single fixed and single movable and their properties
What is directional advantage
Allows you to pull down to lift the load
What is mechanical advantage
The advantage gained by using simple machines reduces the effort
Why use pulleys
Makes lifting things easier
Enables us to use gravity to help us
(It is easier to pull down than to pull up to lift something)
How is mechanical advantage calculated
MA = load \ effort
