Puligny-Montrachet Flashcards
Describe the wines produced from 1er Cru Clavoillon
The vineyard is located between Les Pucelles and Clos de la Mouchère along the same line of the slope as Batard-Montrachet and BBM. The higher clay content in the soil here gives the wines more of a broader/sturdier texture but the limestone content adds a chalky/flinty expression in the finished wines. Aromas of peach, spices, and a smoky mineral accent are common in wines from here.
Describe the wines produced from 1er Cru Les Pucelles?
Located directly next to Batard and BBM. Similar soil type to Clavoillon with a higher clay content do to its downslope location and thus rounder richer expression, but a touch more elegant and complex. The dry, well-drained soils absorb heat and reflect this onto the vines during cool nights which often leads to more ripeness than in other vineyards. The vines must dig deep here and the result is reduced vigor and smaller more concentrated berries. The groundwater here is also very rich in minerals which leads to an intense stony character in the finished wines from here.
