Puglia Flashcards
Apulia?
Apulia (Puglia)
Apulia, the heel of the boot of Italy, covers a lengthy expanse of coastland on the Adriatic and Ionian Seas. Apulia is the least mountainous region in Italy—characterized by broad plains and low hills, the coastal region’s terrain stands in sharp contrast to that of its rugged neighbors Basilicata and Molise. Apulia’s flat, fertile plains provide an easy outlet for high-yielding viticulture, and much of the region’s mass production is devoted to base wines destined for vermouth, bulk blending material, or distillate. The EU’s vine pull scheme has made an impact on Apulia, and the region’s production is considerably down from its peak in the 1980s, although this the influence on quality overall remains to be seen—Apulia struggles to release more than 2% of its wines at the DOC level. However, as of 2011 Apulia has over two-dozen DOCs and four DOCGs (all awarded in 2011) devoted to this limited production. In northern Apulia, Castel del Monte—a region now home to three DOCG zones—and Rosso Barletta DOC wines are produced, predominantly from the aromatic red grape Nero (Uva) di Troia. Negroamaro, the most cultivated red grape in the region, is prized for its deep color and powerful tannic structure, and is encountered as the major component of nearly every rosso and rosato DOC on the Salento peninsula. Salice Salentino DOC and Brindisi DOC are two of the more prominent appellations. The third major red grape of Apulia is Primitivo, which has been genetically linked to Zinfandel and shares a softly tannic, syrupy character with its American cousin. Primitivo di Manduria DOC lies to the east of Salice Salentino DOC, on the Ionian Coast. The wines are 100% Primitivo. With the advent of Primitivo di Manduria Dolce Naturale DOCG, DOC wines may no longer be fully sweet, but past styles range from secco to dolce. The DOCG wines have a minimum 50 grams per liter of residual sugar, and may be subject to the appassimento process. White wines are produced to a lesser extent in Apulia. Chardonnay and Pinot Bianco show promise in the Salice Salentino DOC, but much of the region’s Trebbiano is aromatized in vermouth production.
