What is PUD?
caused by a break in the mucous lining of the GI tract where is comes into contact w/ gastric juices
What are the 3 different types of ulcers?
-Peptic ulcer
-Duodenal ulcer
-Gastric ulcer
Peptic ulcer
occur in the esophagus, stomach, duodenum
Duodenal ulcer
MOST COMMON-occur in duodenum
-occurs 30-55 years old
Gastric ulcer
-more often in older patients 55-70 years old
-occurs in stomach
PUD is more common in what two type of people
Smokers and chronic NSAID users
Patho behind PUD
ulcer develops when the mucosal barrier is unable to protect the mucosa from damage by acid and juices
Major Risk Factors
-chronic h. pylori
-chronic NSAID use
Other risk factors
-cigarette smoking
-low socioeconomic status
-crowded unsanitary areas
-unclean food/water
-increase age
-family history
S/S
-abdominal pain
-heart burn
-regurgitation
-vomiting
Diagnostic
-radiographic and endoscopic
-h. pylori test
-upper GI series
-biopsy
