What is hypersensitivity pneumonitis?
Pneumonia (inflammation in the lungs) caused by hypersensitivity (allergies to/ autoimmunity) to inhaled organic compounds
What is pneumoconiosis?
Pneumonia (inflammation of the lungs) caused by inhaled dust particles.
Name two types of occupational lung disease.
- Hypersensitivity pneumonitis a.k.a. extrinsic allergic alveolitis
- Pneumoconiosis

What happens to people with chronic hypersensitivity pneumonitis?
Effects are in the lungs:
-extensive fibrosis
- honey-combing & air
trapping
Give a brief overview of asbestos (not diseases relating to it, just asbestos)
- white, brown & blue forms
- white is safest
- usually safe unless disturbed
- banned in 1999
- in 2011 50% UK houses had asbestos
What are the complications of asbestosis?
- pleural disease
- mesothelioma
- lung cancer
What is mesothelioma?
cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, tummy, heart or testicles

Name the two factors that have a synergistic effect on the relative risk of lung cancer
- Smoking
- Asbestos exposure
