Public health Flashcards
What is an ecological study?
A descriptive study carried out a population level
What are cross-sectional studies?
Snapshot data on participants at a single point of time, - measures the prevalence
What are examples of observation studies?
Case-control
Cohort studies
What is a case control study?
-Identifies those with a particular outcome and the looks at presence of previous hypothesised risk factors
(opposite of a cohort study)
What is a cohort study?
A study identifying hypothesised risk factors and then follow up the study participants to measure the outcome of interest
What is a randomised control trial?
Groups allocated the intervention or control group
Benefits of rcts?
- minimised bias and confounders
- strong evidence of causal relationships found
disadvantages of rcts?
- expensive
- big study teams needed
- large drop out rates
