Community
Cluster of people with at least one common characteristic OR group of people with a common characteristic living together within a larger society.
Example: A group of healthcare workers living in the same neighborhood.
Community medicine
Study of health & disease in the population of a specified community.
Example: Researching the prevalence of diabetes in a specific town.
Community diagnosis
Identification & quantification of health problems in a community as a whole in terms of mortality & morbidity rates, and identification of their correlates for the purpose of defining those at risk or those in need of health care.
Example: Analyzing mortality rates to identify health risks in a community.
Community analysis
Process of examining data to define needs, strengths, barriers, opportunities, readiness, and resources.
Example: Assessing the availability of healthcare facilities in a specific neighborhood.
Epidemiology
Study of disease distribution & factors that affect this distribution & the application of this study to control the disease.
Health
State of COMPLETE physical, mental, and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.
Health promotion
Process of enabling people to increase control over & improve their health.
Public health
Efforts organized by society to protect, promote, and restore people’s health through collective or social actions.
Preventive medicine
Specialized field of medicine practice focusing on the health of defined populations to maintain health & prevent disease, disability, and premature death.
Epidemiologic transition
Describes changing patterns of population age distribution, mortality, fertility, life expectancy, and causes of death.
Social determinants of health
Conditions in and under which people are born, grow, work, and live, and the broader set of forces that shape daily life.
Risk factor
Factor associated with a given health process, outcome, or condition OR variables that contribute to the probability of an adverse health outcome.
Health inequality
Differences in health of individuals or groups with no moral judgment on fairness.
Health inequity
Special type of health inequality denoting an unfair difference in health of individuals or groups.
