-Check you are speaking to the right person

What are the conductors actions in an emergency?
-Check if any lines are obstructed
-Decide the quickest way to stop the train
-Place a track circuit operating clip on EVERY line that is obstructed
-Constanct the driver and decide who is carrying out emergency protection
3 steps for emergency protection
- Place a track circuit operating clip on every line that is obstructed.
- Show a hand danger signal to any train that is approaching the obstruction.
- Protect with detonators.
What 3 times do conductors carry out emergency protection?
- If the driver is incapacitated AND
- The driver is obstructed AND
- If the signaller cannot be contacted or provide signal protection
How do you protect a double track line?
- walk 1 1/4 miles on the adjacent line facing the direction of traffic
- Place 3 detonators 20 metres apart
- Continue as far as necessary until you can contact the signaller
3 steps to protect a multi track line
- Walk 1 1/4 miles on all obstructed lines
- Place 3 detonators 20 metres apart on all appropriate lines
- Use route knowledge to prioritise which line to protect first

- Telephone or signal box
- Tunnel

- Place 3 detonators 20 metres apart immediately
- Stand 30 metres away

- Place 3 detonators 20 metres apart at the telephone or signal box
- Ensure the last detonator is at least 30 metres away from the telephone or signal box
- If you contact the signaller and have confirmation of signal protection, you don’t need to travel the full protection distance
