HOW MANY VOLTS IS A CONDUCTOR RAIL?
650-750 VOLTS DC
35
WHAT SHOULD YOU NOT DO TO CONDUCTOR RAILS?
-Step on or touch the rail or protective guard bordering -Allow any clothing, objects or equipment to come into contact unless necessary -Direct jet water or liquid at it -Step in water that is also touching the conductor rail
36
A NATIONAL GRID POWER LINE HAS COLLAPSED ONTO THE LINE, WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Keep a minimum distance of 5 metres and report it to the ECO to arrange isolation
37
WHAT DOES A LIMITED CLEARANCE (RED & WHITE) SIGN INDICATE?
-There is no position of safety this side of the railway for the full length of the structure -Do not enter or stand here when trains are passing
38
WHAT DOES NO REFUGE (BLUE & WHITE) INDICATE?
-There is no position of safety on this side of the railway for the full length of the structure. However, there is on the opposite side.
39
WHAT DOES A PROHIBITION SIGN INDICATE?
-You must not pass this sign while trains are passing unless doing emergency protection -Take care if you are to do so -You wont be able to reach a position of safety
40
WHAT DOES A REFUGE SIGN INDICATE?
A safe place to stand when trains are passing by
41
WHAT IS A SIGNAL POST TELEPHONE (BLACK STRIPES)?
-Found at signal posts -Associated with specific signals -Direct line to controlling signaller
42
WHAT IS A LINE SIDE TELEPHONE (BLACK CROSS)?
-Found on platforms -Direct line to controlling signaller
43
WHAT WILL YOU FIND INSIDE A TELEPHONE?
-Phonetic alphabet -Control signaller details -Ordinance survey reference
44

WHAT 4 THINGS DO YOU NEED TO KNOW FOR SAFETY WALKING?
-line speed for position of safety -Direction of travel -Areas of prohibition -Areas of limited clearance
46
WHAT IS AN AUTHORISED WALKING ROUTR?
A safe place to and from work and can be found near depots, stations and signal posts
47
WHERE SHOULD YOU WALK WHEN WALKING ALONE?
1 Public/authorised walking route 2 In the CESS Facing traffic 3 In the FOUR FOOT facing traffic NEVER IN THE SIX FOOT
48
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN WALKING ALONE?
-Look up every 3-5 seconds -Only walk on ballast -Do not walk on sleepers or running rail -Beware of general hazards
49
I TRAIN IS APPROACHING AND YOU ARE ON THE TRACK WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
-Move to a position of safety -Signal to the driver by raising your hand above your head
50
What are the different horn blasts?
-Train moving in visual direction: one blast -Train moving in wrong direction: series of short blasts
51
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO WHEN CROSSING A LINE?
-Look for a bridge, subway level crossing or authorised walking route -Find a position of safety -Look both ways -Walk in a straight line -Cross quickly once safe to do so -Only walk on ballast
52
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO IF YOU GET CAUGHT OUT?
-Lie on the ground -gather all items and loose garments -stay there until the train has passed -once all trains have passed move to a position of safety -report a NEAR MISS to control signaller -fill out an A form
